How Do We See God’s Providential Hand of Blessing After the Civil War?
Just as we see in the Word of God, the judgment of the Lord on nations is tempered with the blessings of God on His people for the sake of His Name, so we see that God tempered His judgment on our country with His divine blessing. The result of maintaining a unified nation rather than two separate nations has provided numerous benefits for all those residing within the United States of America, including the following:
- A stronger military power to aid in the upcoming World War I and World War II conflicts.
- A stronger economic power fueled by an increase in the sharing and development of technology in the country without the need to export to a foreign nation.
- A stronger political power providing the country with a greater international influence due to their military and economic strength.

Temporal benefits yes, but considering the state of the economy and the pillars on which it rests, the kind of unified nation that was created, etc, it seems hard not to envision a country which is headed to one of two extremes: either total anarchy by catastrophic economic failure, or comprehensive tyranny. I don't want to be a prophet of doom, but this nation couldn't really do more than we have done to beg for God's judgement.
That is why we must preach the truth. If God's people humble themselves and turn from their sins, He has promised that he WILL heal their land. If we do not speak the truth about God's law and covenant with his people, we would as well be praying to God for judgement.
For my part, I just can't say that there really was any great blessing in having a unified nation. A few temporal benefits perhaps. But I would rather have several confederations with constant wars then a huge empire unified in both peace and tyranny.

We did struggle to find some blessings in all this to not have a totally negative display!
Basically, we thought, "may as well make the best of it" since the war went the way it did.

I'm glad that God works all things after the counsel of His own will--we know that all things will work together for good for them that love God. If we don't see all the good in this life, we will later. God was working out His plan before, during, and following the War Against the States; we know He will bring every foul act committed during that time to justice (per Nahum 1:3). So I'd say that's something positive, at least for those in Christ.
I personally believe we don't even know if World War II would have occurred if the War Against the States had ended differently, much less could we say the outcome of World War II would have been different.
Of course, I appreciate your understanding of the unity during World War II as merely a beneficial by-product of the outcome of the war rather than as a justification of the Union cause.(Yes, I've heard that one used.)
